Jamaicans from all walks of life were in frenzy as they watched the fantastic female trio swept a one, two and two victory in the 100m finals. Yes, Gold, Silver and Silver. It was sweet victory for the ladies and at that moment we recognized how great and talented we are when we put our hearts into whatever you do and with that we can and will achieve. Shelly-Ann Fraser jumped out of the block like a bullet and took the Gold, Sherone Simpson and Kerron Stewart took the Silvers.
Expectations were high as Melaine Walker fed off the exhilarating victory and was poised to take home a Gold medal in the 400m Hurdles and so she did in record time.
Shericka Williams who is also popularly known as 'Wire' because of her small frame was the big stunner for the Jamaican Camp as she was not a favorite to medal in the 400m race. Jamaican born American Sanya Richards went into the competitions as the favorite and world champion but it was the strong robust Christine Ohuruogu from Great Britain who powered her way to the front as Shericka 'Wire' Williams went into overdrive and cruised into second for the Silver while the world champion ran out of juice and had to settle for the third place spot.
It was 'easy does it' for Jamaica sprint queen darling Veronica Campbell-Brown as she went in as the reigning Olympic champion in the 200m. She retained that titled and is the only women who have done so back-to-back. Kerron Stewart took the Islands first Bronze medal since the start on the Olympics game.
The most medals Jamaica has ever won at an Olympic Game is 7. Now, that record has been broken thanks to the devoted, hardworking and tremendous efforts of our Jamaican Athletes and coaches.
So far we have nine (9) medals in total; five (5) Gold, three (3) Silver and one (1) Bronze.
Although it is an accomplishment for Jamaica, it is also one for all the Caribbean nations. Cuba, Our neighbors have also capture two (2) Gold, six (6) Silver and six (6) Bronze while Trinidad is the only other Caribbean Island to medal, receiving one (1) Silver in the 100m courtesy of Richard Thompson. Congratulations!
The Games are coming to an end and the nation eagerly awaits the relays where from this standpoint, Jamaica is looking superb.
